On Guard For You is a public information campaign developed by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 in response to a February 2021 Toronto city-wide poll that measured public opinion on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) plan to eliminate subway system Guards.
The TTC plan, known as One Person Train Operation (OPTO) would change the longstanding practice of 2-person subway operation: An Operator who drives the train from the front car and a Guard in the rear of the train who has several safety-related responsibilities. Under the OPTO plan, the Guard’s responsibilities are added to the Operator’s duties.
The TTC has not explained how eliminating the Guard would make the subway safer for passengers. Because it can’t. There is simply no evidence that one-person train operation is safer.
The public seems to understand this, which would account for the strong opposition to Guard elimination and even stronger support for public consultation before the OPTO plan can be implemented.
ATU Local 113 has represented Toronto public transit employees for over a century. We are committed to public safety and proud of our industry-leading record.
